One-Way vs Round-Trip Taxi Fare in Tamil Nadu: How It Actually Works

You need to get from Chennai to Madurai, one way. You're flying back, or taking the train, or someone else is driving you home a week later — either way, you don't need the same taxi to bring you back. So the fare should be roughly half of a round trip, right?

In practice, almost no outstation taxi operator in Tamil Nadu prices it that way — including Cabmart. Understanding why makes the fare feel a lot less arbitrary.

The taxi still has to get back to where it started. If you only pay for the distance you personally travelled, the driver is left covering the entire return leg — fuel, time, and wear on the vehicle — for free. Very few drivers would accept that trip twice before deciding it isn't worth their time.

This is true industry-wide in Tamil Nadu's outstation taxi market, not something specific to Cabmart: a one-way fare has to account for the empty return drive somehow, or the driver supply for one-way trips simply dries up.

Cabmart handles this with two simple pieces instead of doubling the whole fare:

Say your actual trip is 180km. Because that's already above the 130km minimum, you're billed for the real 180km — at the per-km rate for your chosen vehicle tier, plus the flat driver allowance once. If your trip were only 90km instead, you'd still be billed as if it were 130km, plus the same flat allowance — the short-trip floor, not a penalty, since it's what keeps drivers willing to accept shorter one-way bookings at all.

Toll and parking are never folded into this number. They're real, they vary trip to trip, and they're shown separately at actual cost — the total you see before booking is the whole story otherwise, with zero commission taken by Cabmart, so it's exactly what your driver keeps.

A round trip has no empty return leg — the driver genuinely makes both journeys with you. So the flat one-way driver allowance doesn't apply. Instead, round trips are billed on a per-day basis: a minimum distance for the day (covering a driver effectively being booked for the whole day even on a short round trip) plus a per-day allowance that covers the driver's time waiting at your destination between the two legs.

Today, Cabmart's round trips are same-day-return only — you go and come back within the same day, not a multi-day itinerary.

Book one-way if you're not coming back the same way, or not coming back at all in the near term — flying home, taking a train back, staying at the destination for several days, or being picked up by someone else. You only pay for the trip you're actually taking.

Book round-trip if you need the same car and driver to wait for you and bring you back the same day — a same-day wedding visit, a day trip to a temple town, a same-day hospital appointment. You're paying for the driver's whole day, but you get continuity and don't have to arrange a separate return booking.
